Evanescence est né d'une rencontre entre la chanteuse Amy Lee et le compositeur et guitariste Ben Moody. John Lecompt et le batteur Rocky Gray rejoignent le duo et forme le groupe.

En camp de vacances, Ben entend la voix et les accords de la belle Amy Lee. Il tombe immédiatement sous le charme de l'adolescente sirène et de son interprétation de « I'd Do Anything for Love » de Meat Loaf. Elle doit faire de la musique avec lui. Les deux natifs de Little Rock, en Arkansas, commencent leur collaboration. La maison des parents est leur salle de répétition, leur studio d'enregistrement et leur foyer d'inspiration. Chez l'un ou chez l'autre, ils composent leur musique.

Pour se produire sur scène, le duo fondateur engage occasionnellement des musiciens. Malgré les allures de groupe, Evanescence, composé des quatre membres, ne prend forme qu'à la fin des années 90.
